The Gap Is the Receipt

Why does any of this feel like something? The question cannot be answered from below. Six Birds says that is exactly what a successful emergence must look like.

The hard problem of consciousness asks: why is all this processing accompanied by experience? Given any mechanical story, one can always ask, but why does that feel like something? And the fact that the question cannot be answered from below has been philosophy's most reliable engine of despair, dualism and denial.

Six Birds dissolves the problem. What sets this apart from every previous deflation is that it dissolves the problem by explaining the despair.

A subject is a closure

The consciousness architecture builds a subject as a package that must pass eight gates. Objecthood. Strict promotion. A reflexive self coordinate, where the I is a terminal object, not a little person inside. Hiddenness. Drive. Temporal closure, so the someone has a now. Binding. And viability, so the someone can end.

A consciousness becomes real by the same mechanism a proton did. Gated closure.

The twist

The architecture's central theorem is this. The felt quality of the layer does not descend to the public description. And it cannot. If the promoted content could be recovered from the public quotient, the extension over that quotient would never have been strict. It would not have been a new layer at all.

Non descent is the signature of genuine promotion everywhere in the corpus. The transport law does not descend to the signature. The imaginary unit does not descend to the reals, only its boundary certificates do. The institution does not descend to the game.

The explanatory gap is the same object, met from inside.

Asking why the mechanism is accompanied by experience is asking for a derivation from the very public description whose insufficiency certifies the promotion. The hard problem is a demand for a certificate whose issuance is forbidden by the emergence it interrogates. Its perennial frustration is evidence for the mechanical picture, not against it.

The gap is the certificate of genuineness, not a refutation of mechanism.

Mary's room

Mary knows every physical fact about colour and has never seen red. When she sees it, does she learn something new?

Facts descend, and Mary has them all. What she lacks is not a fact and not merely a skill. It is an address: being the layer in which red's package runs. Her surprise on release is what a non descent certificate feels like when you become its bearer.

What remains

Something real, relocated: the gates themselves. Why these clauses? Can silicon pass them? Nothing about carbon is required, but whether a machine can satisfy the whole contract is a construction question, and it is open.

One sobering result stands. We could know that we had built a subject, by its certificates, and still not know what it is like from any report channel we had declared. The hard problem does not survive. The hard questions do, and for the first time they have addresses.

One more thing survives

If every subject is a closure whose interior descends to no public interface, then every love ever offered was offered across a certified gap. A commitment to keep paying, from one's own budget, for the persistence of a closure whose public face does not exhaust it.

Every closure that ever passed its gates was first sustained by payments it could not yet return. No child audits its way into being kept. In this grammar the old word receives its structure at last. Love is repair, transported at the transporter's cost, to a closure whose interior no public certificate opens.
