Six Birds Protocol Trap: Holonomy Without Entropy Production

Route dependence is not an arrow of time.

Update steps that do not commute can look like time asymmetry. The paper shows how to tell them apart.

Compare two things. First, an externally scheduled composition of two reversible kernels. Second, an autonomous version where a clock inside the system drives the switching.

Scheduled: strictly positive entropy production. Autonomous with an unbiased clock: zero, even though the steps still do not commute. Bias the clock and the arrow returns in proportion to the bias.

Conclusions are for finite state discrete time kernels and the lift studied.
